The Meeting of Ronnie Rocket, My Amazing Cat

As Told By: Bhupinder Brown

In 2013, I went to my nearest cats protection and saw a beautiful and playful ten month old tuxedo cat with a cheeky, chappy face.

Ronnie’s first day at home

I have always wanted black or tuxedo cats as they are usually last to be adopted or never at all and this tuxie I saw was originally called Wilson and had been at the shelter for around three weeks. When the pen was opened, Wilson decided to greet me with his right paw up in the air in a 'high five' position! That immediately sealed the deal for me, I felt I had been “chosen” by him.

I asked if I could hold Wilson and initially, he did not like to be picked up. after further inquiries, I was told he was found in a box, abandoned, so he was very timid and scared.

I decided to let him come to me so being very patient, held my hand out and eventually he came to me, rubbing his head and purring, which was great progress!

I initially didn't have a cat carrier at the time so had to wait a week before I could take Wilson home - it was the longest week ever, I could not stop thinking about that cheeky, little face!

Eventually, I got Wilson home and let him explore the house. He was quite fast and would run at lightning speed, so I thought his current name did not suit him. I am a huge fan of snooker and my favourite player being Ronnie O'Sullivan, I decided to name my tuxie after him as he had all the mannerisms of speed and the colouring of the snooker player’s uniform. (Ronnie the snooker player holds the record for the fastest 147 - 5 minutes, 20 seconds - that’s super-fast!).

Ronnie’s namesake

His first Christmas was very memorable, he had never seen a Christmas tree and watched from the other end of the lounge as the tree was being decorated. Once finished, he approached cautiously, he was in awe, having all these shiny baubles to play with! No doubt the majority came off and were rolling down the hallway and I even found some in my mums’ shoes! Now he has his own mini Christmas tree complete with a Ronnie angel on top!

Ronnie’s first few Christmases

As time went on, I noticed lots of different aspects of Ronnie's colourful personality - I found him to be intelligent as he would open doors that were slightly ajar, and he would appear in a room without making a sound. I also found out his love of chippy chips, after stealing one from my plate and running off with it to eat! So, every Friday, we have chippy chips that he likes to have on his own chip paper (he’s only allowed one small chip cut into tiny pieces along with his bowl of cat food). He even tries to steal my cake!

Ronnie’s love of human food

He loves to cross his paws when thinking and tilts his head from side to side in understanding me when I am talking to him. He also loves to help me on the piano to tickle the ivories and has many favourite TV programmes (snooker being one of them, especially when his namesake is playing). His favourite time of year is Halloween and has his own plastic pumpkin which lights up.

Ronnie watching his favourite sport

His favourite toys among many are Mr. Big Mouse, Mr. Ball and fishes on a string. He also loves his mouse laser light that was given to him when he left for his forever home with me. I can honestly say, my life is happier with cats in them and I’m so thankful I found Ronnie who continues to bring me so much joy and happiness.
