Chester, The Box Kitten

As Told By: Jenna Rose Geiser

Chester “The Floof Cat” is a very vocal life companion, and in true form he came into my world with a big yell (which I’m assuming was very hard for him to make since he was barely six inches long at the time). I was working at a farmers market one day when I heard something like the squawk of a bird. Behind a trashcan, I found him: Chester was small, dirty, scared, but he also had the prettiest blue eyes and soft white fur with dark grey markings. My friend and I got him into a cardboard box with some fresh water. He kept popping his head out of the box, trying to see everyone and everything. After a few unsuccessful jailbreaks, I brought him home.

He yelled, of course, as I get him all set up and cleaned up (very vocal kitty). He had an obvious irritation in his left eye. He was so small, he could stand on all four paws in the palm of my hand. I put him in a large pet carrier by my bed for the night. He just sat at the front of the carrier and watched me until I fell asleep.

The next day after an exam, the vet informed us that Chester was only four weeks old and weighed barely a pound. But he had no chip, so he was ready to adopt! To this day I still can’t figure out where he came from - there were no houses nearby the farmers market. The vet also told us that Chester did have an eye condition but thankfully it only requires eyedrops.

At first I focused on helping Chester get bigger and gain some weight. He loved his kitten food (poultry, no fish). He also liked to roll on rugs and scratch his back against them. He would dash around the house and then always find his way back to my side. Soon he started giving me kisses on the nose - relentlessly, like a puppy. With other people he can be wary, but with me he’s pure affection.

He has also chosen to be an indoor cat - he’ll look out of windows, but open doors send him hiding under the nearest piece of furniture. Considering the harrowing little adventure he must have had a baby before he got to me, I don’t blame him.

As Chester grew, it was clear that he came from some kind of special cat breed. His coat became thick and floofy, his markings were very specific, and he still had those lovely blue eyes. I haven’t been able to pin down his breed yet, but Chester is a beautiful example of whatever he is. He grew into a healthy boy who loves playing with water, hiding his toys, and (still) rolling around on rugs.

And he gives me kisses all the time. I love brushing out his hair and keeping his eye healthy. He turned five this past year (2020) and is such a treasure. When he came into my life, I had recently lost a pet. I’m grateful we found each other when we did.
