Owning My Cat Gave Me A Purpose in Life

As Told By: Kris Salter

In the Summer of 2018, a friend of mine told me her husband had found a stray kitten dodging traffic in that immediately hopped in his car when he opened up. However, they were unable to keep him because she was allergic and they were going to have to give him to the shelter. Feeling bad, I told her I would take him in.

At this point in my life, I was in a low place, and I thought taking care of an animal would help give me some purpose in life. So when I first met him, he walked up to me and started sniffing me. After about a minute of this, he pushed his tiny head in my hand and I knew we needed each other. When I asked if they had given him a name yet, they said no.

So I asked my little sister later for a good name and she picked “Blair.” After I brought him home, I noticed his personality start to show over the course of the next few days; he was curious about anything new, he loved to hunt down any bugs in my apartment, he was always finding new hiding spots, and he always had to be in the same room I was in, all traits he continues to this day.

It’s been nearly three years, and Blair’s still a loyal companion and we’ve been through a lot since then, whether it was hiding his presence from my landlords, the time my family had to take him in because my new apartment didn’t allow pets, moving to a new house, getting a new dog friend/enemy, or the 2018 earthquake that knocked out our power and water for two days and I found him hiding under the couch, meowing for me to comfort him.

He’s the first thing I see in the morning, the first thing I see when I get home from work, and the last thing I see when I got to bed, mostly because he sleeps at the foot of my bed.
