Author Q+A: Jamila T. Davis of “She’s All Caught Up”

What inspired you on this book?

In 2008, I was sentenced to serve 12 1/2 years in federal prison for bank fraud. While incarcerated, I had the privilege to be apart of a group called “Choices.” We went out to schools and talked to at-risk children about the consequences of poor choices and living life in the fast lane. Through our message we were able to pierce the hearts of some of the most rebellious teens. When they saw the type of time we got sentenced to and the credibility of our stories, it made them take heed. When I saw their reactions, it inspired me to write “She’s All Caught Up.”

Why did you want to become a writer?

Behind bars I have limited access to the world. By writing and reading for endless hours, I saw how powerful written words are. They allow you time to digest them and come back to them when needed. Realizing the power of the pen, it inspired me to become a writer.

What was the hardest part of creating this book?

Writing this memoir I really dug deep! I shared things I thought I’d take to my grave. It was difficult to look at all of my flaws. I went from being a child prodigy, gracing the stage in dance recitals at Lincoln Center, staring in an off-Broadway play and being accepting to the “Fame” School of the Arts, to becoming a multi-millionaire by the age of 25. Then, it all went bad and I landed in federal prison. That was a hard hit for me! Tracing back the path that led me on a down hill spiral was painful. Yet, it helped me greatly in my journey to healing and restoration.

What do you hope people gain from reading it?

I hope my courage to be real, and share the naked truth, will inspire others to do the same. We often wear masks and become what society dictates. My story is a reminder of the importance of remaining true to self and not let others influence us to be someone we are not. If so, it can cost us everything!

What is your advice to people who are not excited about reading?

Spending close to a decade behind bars, I read hundreds of books. I learned so much from reading, especially from memoirs and autobiographies. A lot of times we feel lost in life, and we seek answers. Yet the help we are looking for can be found in a book. It’s just up to us to read it! Knowing there are many valuable books that are filled with inspiration and knowledge that can propel us to he next level, it’s vital that we read!

Why should we buy your book?

My book will cause you to think and reflect on what’s important in life. Regardless if you have been through my same circumstances or not, you will be able to relate. Many have called my book a “looking glass.” I addressed several issues that others have gone through, yet are afraid to express. My book encourages healing, and finding your own inner joy and beauty. It also reminds people who have strayed off course, it is never too late to find your way back!
